The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Obamacare

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as "Obamacare," has significantly impacted the health insurance landscape for individuals under age 65.

Key aspects of the ACA for individuals under 65:

No denial for pre-existing conditions: Insurance companies cannot refuse coverage or charge more to individuals under 65 based on their health status or pre-existing conditions.

Young adults on parent's plan: Children can stay on their parent's health insurance plan until they turn 26 years old.

Preventive care: Many preventive care services are covered at no additional cost.

Subsidies and cost-sharing reductions: Financial assistance (subsidies and cost-sharing reductions) may be available to help lower the cost of monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

Medicaid expansion: The ACA allowed states to expand Medicaid coverage to low-income adults under 65 with incomes up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Important Notes:

Income limits: To qualify for subsidies, there are income limits based on the Federal Poverty Level.

Metal tiers: Marketplace plans are categorized into metal tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) based on how costs are shared between the plan and the policyholder.

Open Enrollment Period: The annual Open Enrollment Period is from November 1 to January 15 in most states, during which you can enroll in or change plans.
